First, we’d like to correct a couple of common misconceptions about loose leash walking. For our purposes, we are going to define it as having a slight J shape in the leash and your dog walking comfortably by your side. It is not the obedience style “heelwork” that you may have seen at dog shows or on the T.V.
We would also like to stress that it is impossible to expect your dog to walk on a loose leash at all times.
Dogs love to sniff and explore their environment.
They find this naturally reinforcing.
Walking by their human’s side is certainly NOT natural dog behavior.
Therefore, it is the wise human who plans walking expeditions with their dog’s natural reinforcers in mind.
