This quarter’s Featured Training Team is Linda Trent and her wonderful Golden Retriever, Charlie. Let me hand over to Linda to tell you about their journey in her own words.
Transformation of a team – Linda and Charlie
Two years ago, I reconnected with Lynne at DogLogic when I started training my new Golden Retriever,
Charlie. Little did I know how much my perspective would change in a few short years.
First of all, was me – I had the dog of my dreams for agility and I was too fat to run around Lynne’s building with him. So for me, it was a moment of reckoning with myself. With some life changes, I have lost 70 pounds in the past 2 years (50 the first year and 20 the second year). I am still a work in progress but can run with Charlie now.
Now it’s time for Charlie, he is the happiest dog and most athletic Golden I have ever had (he is my 4th). He started at Lynne’s knowing how to jump and run around. He did more running around than listening when we began. I started clicker training and immediately he began to “listen” to me. He was afraid to get on the contacts, so we started with a board on the ground with clicks and treats. Lynne did lots of the initial clicking to teach me better timing. So after a few months of lessons, we bought a house to get a backyard for the contact equipment and Charlie’s confidence grew with practice and lots of treats and clicks.
We had two major obstacles to train – the weave poles and teeter. With Lynne’s guidance on using the table to the teeter, we have conquered that one too. The weave poles are a work in progress but we are getting those too.
What I learned from Lynne is that training a happy and confident dog is always best. She helped understand that Charlie’s confidence was built by teamwork and love. This came from patience, consistency and clicker training.
Charlie earned his Novice Jumpers title in January 2019 and got his first leg in Novice Standard. With work, training, and continued partnership with Lynne, we will strive for our MACH. The root of the training relationship is trust, fun, and love between me and Charlie. I found that through DogLogic and Lynne.
Thank you, Lynne.
