Sometimes we don’t realize how just one little struggle is going to change life’s course.
When students Kathy and Byron first came to DogLogic for guidance with their amazing little rescue crossbreed, Farley, they had no idea of the adventure they were about to begin.
Thank you Farley for being a wise mentor at the start of their great adventure and for teaching Kathy and Byron the skills needed to transform both Cricket and Dodger from Pups to the Powerhouses they are today.
First with Cricket and then, just 18 months ago, with Dodger, lessons learned with Farley were utilized to teach both pups some crucial pre-competition lessons.
- Lesson 1– Patience!
For the handlers! This will always be rewarded!
- Lesson 2 – Establish good habits right from the start.
When did they begin agility training? Right away – but not how you think! Both young Wonder pups learned how great it was to run to race to their crates, re-orient to their handlers and many other fun, crazing looking, highly motivating and essential foundation behaviors.
- Lessons 3 – Learning how to learn.
Kathy and Byron’s increasing understanding of marker based positive reinforcement training, meant that both pups soon became eager to earn reinforcement by trying new behaviors.
- Lesson 4 – Understanding cues and stimulus control.
Putting those behaviors on cue and getting them under great stimulus control taught the pups that paying attention to mum and dad would always bring the greatest rewards!
- Lesson 5 – Generalization!
Lessons learned were generalized to new sport related behaviors and the rest, as they say, is history!
