Socialization – What is it not?
Socializing your puppy does not mean expecting them to accept unwanted attention from strangers or other dogs. Nor does it mean taking them to the dog park or a puppy party, where they might easily become overwhelmed, without very careful supervision.
Socialization – What is it?
Instead, expose them to as many novel stimuli as possible. Realize that most “human norms” are novel stimuli to your pup. Things such as vacuum cleaners, dishwashers, bicycles, people in hats, umbrellas and many, many more are “novel stimuli” that your dog would be unlikely to encounter outside our human world. Don’t wait for them to show apprehension to novel stimuli. Just go ahead and treat them for noticing and accepting them in his world! (Classical Conditioning)
